Conservation

Architectural conservation is the process of preserving the life and architectural character and integrity of our historic built environment.

This process is undertaken by a conservation architect, and entails careful planning and an in-depth knowledge of the philosophy and principles of conservation, along with an ability to advise on the policy and regulations regarding historic structures.

Randal McDonnell Architects offer a complete architectural conservation service, from initial examination of the historic building including research on the history of the building to identification of any required remedial works, to the careful design and integration of appropriate new works, including extensions and alterations.

"A historic building is a finite, non-renewable resource which needs special skills to ensure its survival. Once the original fabric is lost, the special character of the building may be destroyed, and the building’s authenticity can never be restored."
